JEE Advanced
What is JEE Advanced?
JEE Advanced is the nation-wide entrance examination for the engineering admissions to the IITs (Indian Institute of Technology). It is conducted once every year with around 2 lakh candidates from all over the country (after qualifying JEE Mains). Students are allowed to attempt the exam in the year they pass the class 12 board exam, and the year after (with certain conditions).
JEE Advanced 2020
Conducting a national exam in the middle of an international situation (the Covid-19 pandemic) was indeed difficult. It was postponed several times. 'Cancelling' and 'finding alternate ways to admit students' were some of the actively discussed topics.
Finally JEE Advanced was conducted on 27th September, 2020. After securing an All India Rank of 5634, I couldn't get any of the circuit branches (which I was looking for). I couldn't get into an IIT. However, I had taken a provisional admission for Computer Science in Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT - Vellore). In another month or two, I got a provisional admission to Birla Institute of Technology and Science Pilani, Goa campus (BITS-Goa). I moved to BITS and was offered the Electronics and Communication Engineering programme.
JEE Advanced 2021
While at BITS, I checked out my option to move to the Computer Science programme. I found that I could either get a branch transfer at BITS or I could try improving my score in JEE Advanced 2021. By the end of the my first semester, a branch transfer become improbable. So I worked more on JEE. Unfortunately, 1 month before the test, I contracted the Covid-19 virus. After more than a whole year of staying safe, I finally fell ill a month before the test. However, I gave another shot at it and secured an All India Rank of 4176. I managed to improve the rank but not enough to drop a year and pursue another branch in another college.
No more attempts
I couldn't attempt the test a third time according to the rules. I'd been working for this test for 5 years before finally writing it. It hurt to realise that neither of my attempts would bring me what I wanted. Luckily by then, I was a few months into the second year of ECE at BITS. It could've been a lot worse, but I am grateful I've got this.
Sometimes I blamed the system. It made no sense to me how the Computer Science admissions were done depending on one's aptitude in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and, not the aptitude in Computer Science. I tried to design a perfect admission system. I couldn't come up with something better either.
When the dust settled, I realised something else. As long as I am the best at what I do, I can make a huge difference and place myself in the world. I always knew that marks don't define a person but suggests a general trend. Realising that many more people know this, I now focus on quality. I am now on a journey not only building a different skillset but building it with strong foundations.
